Leadership isn’t a skill you learn overnight. Even people with years of professional experience still struggle to find the leadership abilities that work most effectively for them. When assuming a leadership position, you often develop leadership skills on the job by reacting to obstacles as they come. Sometimes, you hit may encounter a challenge that you don’t know how to solve, causing significant derailments for your entire team. Here are some common leadership challenges and what you can do to overcome them.
Your Company Lacks Alignment
It’s your responsibility as a leader to get all of your colleagues and team members behind the vision of your company. Without this sense of alignment among all teammates, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to achieve your goals and make your company successful as possible. Creating alignment involves fostering a sense of trust and community, and boosting company morale. In order to do this, you must be present and available as a leader. Listening to your team and addressing their concerns is the best way to generate a sense of solidarity. By opening the lines of communication, you can help to create an environment where everyone is on the same page.
Your Company Lacks Respect for Leadership
This obstacle is much more difficult to tackle. How do you maintain authority without becoming a tyrant? The best way to ensure effective leadership is to know your team. Understanding their unique work habits will help you determine the best way to encourage productivity. Working with team members individually to establish personal goals and commitments is a good way to introduce employee accountability (or better yet, let’s call it “achievement” – accountability is an overused term that sounds like policing) to the workplace. Create respect for your leadership by investing the time to learn about the work habits of your team.
